High school student Joshua Whittingham is the winner of a $500 scholarship created by Barrie MP Patrick Brown.

Brown and Barrie Police Chief Wayne Frechette presented the cheque to Whittingham for winning the Public Safety Scholarship Essay Contest.

In an attempt to get teens involved in the prevention and solution of crime and vandalism
in Barrie, Brown created this scholarship to help high school students finance post-
secondary education costs.

“Maintaining a low crime rate has always been a Barrie trademark. This essay contest
was a way to educate our youth on the best ways to maintain Barrie’s lifestyle as a safe
community,” said Brown.

The essay was judged by Barrie Coun. John Brassard; Frechette, Simcoe County District School Board of Education trustee Diane Firman and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board trustee Connie Positano.

“I’ve been looking for ways to finance my education and winning this scholarship was a
wonderful way to help me get into university. I will use it to further my education in
political science at the University of Toronto next fall,” said Whittingham.

Positano Paving co-sponsored of the contest.
