Barrie will name a street in honour of a York Regional Police detective who died in the line of duty in August.
A Midhurst resident, Det. Const. Robert Plunkett volunteered with Barrie minor soccer and hockey and Ontario Special Olympics.
“I think it’s a fitting tribute for someone who was so involved in our community,” said Ward 7 Coun. John Brassard, a close friend of Plunkett.
“His family really appreciates the City of Barrie and (developer) Melia Corporation’s tribute to Rob by naming the street after him.”
The street will be named Plunkett Court; it will run off of Dock Road and be the street in the development nearest Kempenfelt Bay.
Interestingly, the street is in the same neighbourhood as Wilkin’s Beach, a small park on Capp’s Drive.
The beach honours the memory of Barrie firefighter Bill Wilkins, who died in the line of duty five years ago. He is also honoured in the naming of Wilkins Walk, which runs through the Hewitt’s Creek ravine from Crimson Ridge Road to Big Bay Point Road.
